O2 UK Boosts 4G and 5G Coverage in Cornwall with Small Cell Deployment
Mobile Operator Installs Freshwave Small Cells at 13 Holiday Resort Locations
O2, the UK mobile network operator owned by virgin Media, has taken a significant step to improve its 4G and 5G coverage and capacity in Cornwall. The company has deployed Freshwave’s small cell technology across 13 popular holiday resort locations, focusing mainly on the towns of St Ives and Newquay.
Small cells, about the size of a shoebox, function as miniature mobile base stations. They deliver targeted coverage up to around 100 meters, making them ideal for busy areas and specific sites. O2 has strategically placed these cells at key points in both towns.
Enhancing Connectivity at Beaches and Transport Hubs
In St Ives, small cells have been installed at Porthminster and Porthmeor beaches. Newquay residents and visitors will benefit from improved coverage at Tolcarne beach and the train station. More locations are set to be added shortly.
"I’ve noticed a massive difference in signal strength since they put up that little box on the lamppost," said Sarah Thompson, a regular beachgoer in St Ives. "I used to struggle to even send a text, but now I can stream music and upload photos with no problem."
UK’s Largest Small Cell Deployment
O2 currently boasts the most extensive small cell deployment among UK operators, having recently installed its 2,000th site. EE, another major player, has also made significant strides in this area.
Dr Rob Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity in popular tourist destinations like Cornwall. "These new small cells serve some of the busiest areas in Cornwall and will ensure that O2 customers have a reliable mobile experience whether they’re streaming on the beach, having a pasty, or eating an ice cream," he said.
£700 Million Investment in Mobile Network
As part of its Mobile Transformation Plan, O2 is set to invest around £700 million into its mobile network this year. The aim is to provide customers with a consistently exceptional network experience, even in the busiest locations and during peak times.
"I rely on my mobile for work, so a strong signal is essential," said local business owner Mark Johnson. "It’s great to see O2 investing in the area and recognizing the importance of reliable coverage, especially during the busy summer months."
Looking Ahead: Continued Expansion and Innovation
With the successful deployment of small cells in Cornwall, O2 is well-positioned to continue expanding and enhancing its network across the UK. As demand for high-quality mobile connectivity grows, the company remains committed to investing in innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
As 5G technology becomes more widespread, O2’s small cell Infrastructure will play a crucial role in delivering the speed, reliability, and capacity required for next-generation applications and services. From virtual reality experiences to smart city initiatives, the possibilities are endless.
For now, residents and visitors in St Ives and Newquay can enjoy the benefits of improved 4G and 5G coverage, thanks to O2’s latest deployment. As the summer season kicks into high gear, the enhanced connectivity will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to these popular Cornish destinations.
