Giffgaff Launches £10 Mobile Plan with 100GB Data for UK Students

In a bid to attract more student customers, mobile provider giffgaff has unveiled a new plan tailored specifically for those with an .ac.uk email address. The deal offers a generous 100GB of mobile data for just £10 per month on a 12-month contract.

Sweetening the Deal with Prize Draws

To further entice students, giffgaff is running a promotion where everyone who activates their eSIM or physical SIM card using an .ac.uk email will be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win a £500 gift voucher. As an added bonus, all entrants are guaranteed to receive £20 just for participating.

Unlimited Texts, Minutes, and EU Roaming Data

The student-focused plan doesn’t skimp on other features either. It includes unlimited UK texts and minutes, making it easy for students to stay connected with friends and family. For those planning to travel within the EU, the plan also comes with 5GB of inclusive roaming data.

Targeting University and College Students

While the term "student" can refer to anyone studying at any level, giffgaff’s offer seems to be aimed primarily at those in higher education. The requirement of an .ac.uk email address, typically associated with universities and degree-granting colleges, suggests the plan is designed for students 18 and older.

Mixed Reactions from Existing Customers

News of the student deal has sparked some frustration among giffgaff’s long-time customers. "Big kick in the teeth for me, I’ve been with them for over 15 years, why don’t they do a long service plan for those of us," commented Chris Sayers, a loyal giffgaff user.

Others questioned the value of the offer, with one commenter noting, "Sounds still super pricey for a network like O2… They used to be the cheapest."

Giffgaff’s MVNO Partnership with O2

Giffgaff operates as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on the O2 network, which is owned by Telefónica. This arrangement allows giffgaff to offer competitive plans without having to build and maintain its own mobile Infrastructure.

Looking Ahead: Attracting and Retaining Customers

As the mobile market continues to evolve, providers like giffgaff will need to find innovative ways to attract and retain customers. While the student plan is a step in the right direction, some argue that more could be done to reward long-term loyalty and provide value across all customer segments.

With the academic year just around the corner, it remains to be seen how successful giffgaff’s student-focused initiative will be in capturing a larger share of the youth market. As competition heats up, customers can expect to see more targeted offers and promotions from mobile providers vying for their business.
