Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme Expands to Cities Across UK

The government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, previously only available in rural areas, is now being extended to homes and businesses in urban centers throughout the United Kingdom.

£67 Million in New Funding

An additional £67 million has been allocated to the voucher program, which provides up to £3,000 for businesses and £1,500 for households to install lightning-fast gigabit broadband connections. “This will make a massive difference for my graphic design firm,” said Emily Thompson, a small business owner in Manchester. “We’ll be able to upload and download large files in seconds rather than minutes.”

Goal: 85% Coverage by 2025

The expansion aims to help achieve the government’s goal of bringing gigabit-speed broadband to 85% of the UK by 2025. Current gigabit coverage stands at 57%, up from just 6% in 2019. “We’re making excellent progress, but there’s still a long way to go,” noted Digital Infrastructure Minister Julia Lopez. “Extending the voucher scheme to urban areas will accelerate our efforts to close the digital divide.”

Thousands of Connections Delivered

So far, the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme has delivered over 105,000 connections, with another 45,000 in the pipeline. The new funding is expected to support an additional 20,000 connections in cities and towns across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

“I was thrilled to learn our flat in London is now eligible,” exclaimed Mark Pearson, a software engineer who works from home. “Gigabit speeds will be a game-changer for video calls and collaborating with colleagues.”

Economic Benefits

Studies suggest that widespread access to full fiber and gigabit-capable broadband could boost labor productivity by nearly £59 billion by 2025 – a 2.7% increase over 15 years. It could also unlock 58,000 additional jobs across the UK.

“This investment isn’t just about faster internet,” said Chancellor Reeves. “It’s about fueling innovation, attracting businesses, and driving economic growth. We’re putting the UK on the digital fast track.”

Application Process

Suppliers who are registered with the scheme can apply for vouchers on behalf of customers. Funds are issued directly to the suppliers, ensuring a hassle-free experience for homes and businesses taking advantage of the program.

“The application was incredibly straightforward,” reported Sarah Hughes, a graphic designer in Bristol. “Our provider handled everything, and we had our new gigabit connection up and running within two weeks.”

Full Steam Ahead

With the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme now available in both rural and urban areas, the UK is poised to make significant strides in its digital infrastructure over the coming years. As more homes and businesses seize the opportunity to upgrade to lightning-fast broadband, the nation inches closer to its goal of becoming a global leader in connectivity.
