Mobile Coverage Expands Across London Underground Network
Transport for London (TfL) has announced a significant expansion of mobile coverage across the London Underground network, providing passengers with more reliable connectivity during their commutes.
4G Coverage Now Available in 137 Stations
According to TfL, 137 stations across the network now offer 4G mobile coverage from major carriers, including EE, Three, and Vodafone. "We’re committed to keeping London moving and ensuring our passengers can stay connected throughout their journeys," said Mark Wild, Managing Director of London Underground.
The expanded coverage is part of TfL’s ongoing efforts to modernize the Underground network and improve passenger experience. "In today’s digital age, reliable mobile connectivity is essential for both work and personal communication," Wild added.
Collaboration with BAI Communications
TfL has partnered with BAI Communications, a global telecommunications Infrastructure provider, to deliver this enhanced mobile coverage. "We’re proud to work alongside TfL in bringing world-class connectivity to one of the world’s busiest transportation networks," said Billy D’Arcy, CEO of BAI Communications UK.
The collaboration aims to provide full mobile coverage across the entire Underground network by the end of 2024. "This is a complex project, but we’re confident in our ability to deliver a seamless mobile experience for all passengers," D’Arcy stated.
Positive Response from Passengers
Commuters have welcomed the improved mobile coverage, with many expressing their satisfaction on social media. "Finally, I can catch up on emails and stay connected with colleagues during my morning commute," tweeted Sarah Johnson, a daily Central line passenger.
Others have praised TfL’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience. "It’s great to see TfL investing in modern infrastructure that benefits all Londoners," said Mark Thompson, a frequent user of the Piccadilly line.
Ongoing Expansion and Future Plans
While 137 stations now offer 4G coverage, work is ongoing to expand connectivity to the remaining Underground stations. TfL has confirmed that an additional 40 stations will be connected by the end of 2022, with the ultimate goal of providing coverage across the entire network by 2024.
Looking ahead, TfL also plans to introduce 5G connectivity across the Underground network, ensuring passengers can take advantage of the latest mobile technologies. "As 5G becomes more widely available, we want to ensure our network is ready to support it," said Wild.
A Connected Future for London’s Transport Network
The expansion of mobile coverage across the London Underground marks a significant milestone in TfL’s efforts to create a more connected and passenger-friendly transport network. As technology continues to evolve, TfL remains committed to embracing innovation and delivering a world-class travel experience for all Londoners and visitors to the capital.
