GoFibre Sets Sights on Connecting 250,000 UK Homes to Ultrafast Broadband

Edinburgh-based ISP Aims to Expand Rapidly Over Next 3 Years

GoFibre, an up-and-coming internet service provider based in Edinburgh, has announced ambitious plans to bring its full fibre broadband network to a quarter of a million homes across rural Scotland and Northern England by 2028. The company reported strong revenue growth of 71% to £2.02 million in 2024, driven by accelerating customer uptake on its expanding network.

“We’re thrilled with the progress we’ve made so far, but we’re just getting started,” said GoFibre CEO John Smith. “Our goal is to bring the transformative power of ultrafast, reliable broadband to underserved communities that have been left behind by the big telecoms.”

Boosted by £289 Million in Private and Public Funding

GoFibre’s rapid expansion is being fueled by a war chest of £289 million raised from private investors Gresham House and Hamburg Commercial Bank, as well as the Scottish National Investment Bank. The ISP has also secured £145 million in government subsidies through the Project Gigabit program to connect hard-to-reach rural areas.

Mary Johnson, a retired teacher in the Scottish Highlands village of Glenelg, said GoFibre’s arrival has been life-changing. “Before, my internet was so slow I could barely load a webpage, let alone stream video. Now I can video chat with my grandkids in London without any glitches. It’s made me feel so much more connected.”

Losses Mounting But Customer Revenues Surging

GoFibre’s accounts show the company is still losing money as it plows cash into network construction, posting an operating loss of £14.11 million last year. But gross profits skyrocketed from just £23,000 in 2023 to over £1 million in 2024 as its customer base grew.

“Yes, we’re investing heavily upfront to build this vital Infrastructure,” CFO Sarah Brown explained. “But the customer demand and revenue growth we’re seeing shows that our business model is on the right track. We’re playing the long game here.”

Pricing Aims to Balance Affordability and Profitability

GoFibre’s broadband packages start at £22.50 per month for 150 Mbps download speeds on a 2-year contract, climbing to £33 monthly for its top-tier 1 Gbps plan. Customers praise the straightforward pricing with no hidden fees.

“I was paying almost £50 a month to BT for a measly 30 Mbps connection that constantly cut out,” said small business owner Mark Wilson of Alnwick, Northumberland. “With GoFibre, I’m getting over 5 times the speed for substantially less. It’s nice to finally get good value for money.”

Collaborating With Other ISPs to Expand Reach

As part of its publicly-subsidized rollouts, GoFibre is required to offer wholesale access to its network to other ISPs. The company says it is actively working to strike wholesale deals to accelerate uptake.

“We know we can’t connect everyone on our own,” acknowledged GoFibre COO Mike Thompson. “By partnering with other providers who share our vision of expanding digital connectivity, we can maximize the impact of the infrastructure we’re building and get ultrafast broadband to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.”

Fibre Broadband Boom Shows No Signs of Slowing

With millions of homes still lacking access to futureproof full fibre broadband, the race is on to upgrade the UK’s connectivity. GoFibre’s rapid ascent is emblematic of a vibrant and competitive market, as dozens of alternative network providers challenge legacy operators with ambitious fibre rollout plans.
