BT Completes £1.9m Full Fibre Upgrade for 69 Key Public Sector Sites Across Swansea Bay

The Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme has taken a major leap forward with the completion of a £1.9 million full fibre broadband upgrade by BT. The project, delivered via the Public Sector Broadband Aggregation (PSBA) scheme, has connected 69 key public sector sites across the region with future-proofed connectivity.

Retiring Legacy Systems and Saving Money

One site already reaping the benefits is Pembrey Country Park. The new full fibre network has enabled the park to begin retiring its outdated radio-based systems and transition to a more reliable digital platform.

“The switch to full fibre is not only improving our operations, but it’s also saving us a significant amount in annual maintenance costs,” said park manager Rhys Davies. “We can now focus those funds on enhancing the visitor experience.”

Unlocking the Potential of Public Assets

Council leaders emphasize that this project goes beyond just providing fast internet. “It’s about unlocking the full potential of our public assets, futureproofing our region, and ensuring our communities are not left behind in the digital age,” stated Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart.

The connected sites span a wide range of public facilities, including:

  • 23 leisure centres
  • 18 libraries
  • 12 council buildings
  • 8 community centres
  • 5 country parks
  • 3 museums

Enabling Smarter Services and Innovation

With gigabit-capable connectivity now in place, local authorities and health partners can explore innovative ways to deliver smarter services to residents.

“I’m excited to see how this technology can help us improve access to online resources, streamline administrative tasks, and even offer virtual programs,” said Bethan Jenkins, head librarian at Swansea Central Library. “It opens up a world of possibilities.”

Stimulating Further Investment

While the immediate focus has been on public sector sites, the project is expected to catalyze additional commercial investment in the region’s broadband infrastructure.

BT Openreach spokesperson Sarah Thompson noted, “By extending our full fibre network to these key sites, we’re laying the groundwork for wider rollout to homes and businesses. It’s a win-win for the Swansea Bay area.”

Towards a Smart, Inclusive Digital Region

The completed full fibre upgrade marks a significant milestone in the Digital Infrastructure Programme’s mission to create a smart, inclusive digital region ready to meet current and future connectivity demands.

“This is just the beginning,” added Councillor Stewart. “We’re committed to working with partners like BT to ensure that every corner of our community can benefit from the power of digital connectivity.”

With 69 sites now equipped with lightning-fast, reliable broadband, the Swansea Bay City Region is well on its way to becoming a model for digital transformation in Wales and beyond.
