How we score broadband deals

Every live deal in our comparison carries a BBP Score. It's a simple 0 to 100 rating that tells you, at a glance, how strong a deal is on the things most households actually care about: value for money, speed, contract flexibility and upfront cost.

What the score weighs

  • 45%
Value for money. The price you pay per Mbps of headline speed. Cheaper per Mbps scores higher. This stops a flashy headline price from masking a slow connection, and stops a fast plan looking weak just because it's not the lowest-priced.
  • 25%
Speed. Headline average download. We use a square-root curve so a 100 Mbps deal still scores reasonably, and a 1 Gbps plan tops out — we don't reward speed you'll never use.
  • 15%
    Contract flexibility. Shorter contracts score higher. A rolling monthly deal scores 100, a 12-month 80, and a 36-month 25.
  • 15%
Upfront cost. Activation plus any new-line fee. Free upfront scores 100; £150 or more scores 0.

What each band means

Excellent
80-100. Among the strongest deals live today.
Good
60-79. Solid on most of the things that matter.
Fair
40-59. Workable but with notable trade-offs.
Weak
Under 40. Probably not the right deal for most people.

We deliberately use green-to-grey for the band colours, not red. Red is our brand colour for calls to action, so it never appears next to a "weak" score.

What we don't do

  • We don't hide weak-scoring deals. If a provider's offer scores low, it shows that way.
  • We don't paywall providers into the rankings.
  • We don't rewrite a provider's price or speed claims — those come from the live feed.
  • We may earn a commission if you click through to a provider, but it doesn't change the score.
