If the broadband works fine next to the router but crawls in the back bedroom or the loft, you have a coverage problem, not a slow line. That distinction matters, because the fix costs anywhere from about £15 to several hundred pounds depending on which route you take.

There are four practical ways to push Wi-Fi into the rooms it currently misses: a mesh system, a Wi-Fi extender, a wired access point, or powerline adapters. Each solves a slightly different problem. Here is how to tell them apart and, more usefully, how to work out which one your home actually needs.

The four options in plain English

Mesh Wi-Fi is two or more matched units that share a single network name and hand your devices off to the strongest unit automatically as you move around. You walk from the kitchen to the loft and stay on one network the whole time.

A Wi-Fi extender (sold as a booster or repeater) is a single plug-in box that picks up your existing router's signal and rebroadcasts it. It targets one specific dead room and often creates a second network name you have to switch to by hand.

An access point connects to your main router with an Ethernet cable and creates a fresh Wi-Fi hotspot with full-speed internet, because it is wired in rather than repeating a wireless signal.

Powerline adapters send your network signal through the mains wiring of the house, giving you a wired or Wi-Fi connection in a distant room without running a new cable.

How mesh works and who it suits

A mesh uses several nodes rather than one router in the corner, broadcasting from different points around the property. Because the nodes talk to each other, the whole house feels like one continuous network. Devices switch between nodes on their own, and modern kits steer them across the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands automatically.

The strengths are seamless roaming, app-driven setup that usually takes minutes, and easy scaling to three, four or five nodes for a bigger home. Most kits also bring parental controls, guest networks and automatic firmware updates. In independent testing, mesh systems hold onto roughly 80 to 95% of your router's base speed out at range.

Mesh suits large or multi-storey homes, awkward layouts, and households running plenty of connected kit: laptops, phones, a smart TV and a scattering of smart plugs and cameras. The downsides are the up-front cost and the fact that it is overkill for a small flat. Each node also needs a mains socket.

How extenders work and their trade-offs

An extender is the cheapest and simplest option: plug it in roughly halfway between the router and the dead spot, connect it, and it repeats the signal onwards.

The catch is real. A single-radio extender receives and rebroadcasts on the same channel, which typically halves your effective bandwidth. Independent testing puts extenders at somewhere between 40 and 60% of your router's speed, against the 80 to 95% a good mesh keeps. Many also create a separate network name, so your phone clings to the wrong one and you end up switching by hand. There is no band steering and no app to manage things.

For light use in a single stubborn room, an extender can still be the sensible buy. For heavy streaming, gaming or a busy smart home, the results are mixed at best.

How access points work, and when wired backhaul wins

An access point gives you the most reliable Wi-Fi of the lot, because the link back to your router is Ethernet rather than radio. That wired link is called the backhaul. Wired backhaul does not share airtime with your devices, so an access point broadcasts at full speed and handles many devices at once without the slowdown an extender suffers.

The price you pay is cabling. You need an Ethernet run to wherever the access point sits, which may mean drilling or lifting floorboards, and setup is a touch more technical than a plug-in extender or an app-guided mesh. But if your home already has Ethernet in the walls, or you can run a cable to the room that matters, this is the choice for gamers, home workers and anyone who wants a robust network.

Worth knowing: the wired-backhaul principle applies to mesh too. Many mesh kits, including the value picks, let you connect nodes with Ethernet where a cable exists, which noticeably improves reliability over a purely wireless mesh.

Where powerline adapters fit in

Powerline adapters use your home's electrical wiring as the network cable. You plug one adapter in near the router and link it with Ethernet, then plug a second adapter into a socket in the far room to get a wired port or a Wi-Fi hotspot there.

They are a neat middle ground when you cannot run Ethernet but want something more stable than a repeated wireless signal. Performance depends heavily on the state and layout of your household wiring, though, so it varies from home to home and is worth treating as a try-and-see option.

Cost and value: what you will realistically pay

A basic plug-in extender runs about £15 to £40 per unit. That makes it tempting, but only if a single dead room is your entire problem.

Mesh sits higher. Budget two-packs aimed at flats and small houses start around £60 to £100. A mid-range three-unit kit for a typical three-bedroom semi is roughly £150 to £250. The newest Wi-Fi 7 tri-band systems for very large or device-heavy homes run £250 to £350 and beyond. Across the market, a decent mesh for a three-bedroom home lands somewhere between about £150 and £500 depending on how much performance you want.

On standards, current UK kit runs Wi-Fi 6, 6E or Wi-Fi 7, using the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands to cut congestion. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E handle more simultaneous devices without slowing, which matters if the household juggles several at once. For value, a Wi-Fi 6E mesh three-pack such as the TP-Link Deco XE75 sits at around £220 to £350 and covers a good-sized home, while Wi-Fi 7 systems climb well past that.

Access point hardware costs vary, and if you need several the total adds up, but you avoid the speed penalty that dogs extenders.

Diagnose the problem before you buy anything

Do not reach for the credit card until you have checked what is actually wrong, because coverage, congestion and an old router all look similar from the sofa.

Run a speed test on your phone standing next to the router, then walk to the problem room and run it again. A drop of more than half points to a genuine coverage issue. A milder drop, or slowness only between about 7pm and 10pm, is more likely peak-time congestion, which no mesh unit will fix.

Before spending, move the router. Raising it to head height, placing it roughly in the middle of the house, and keeping it away from the TV, microwaves and baby monitors often recovers a room or two for free. Signal weakens with every wall, floor and large metal object, and 5 GHz in particular degrades fast beyond eight to ten metres or two internal walls. Thick external walls, foil-backed plasterboard and steel-framed extensions all block it sharply, so building fabric shapes your result as much as the hardware does.

One more check: if the router is years old, no amount of new kit downstream will rescue an ageing hub. And remember that mesh only improves Wi-Fi inside the home. If the line itself is slow, test it over Ethernet first, because that is a different problem entirely.

Using these with UK ISP routers

Most mesh systems work happily alongside your existing router and provider. You are adding coverage on top of the connection you already pay for. Where you want the mesh to run the whole network, you can often put the ISP hub into a bridged mode and use the mesh for Wi-Fi only, but follow your provider's rules, especially around phone or voice services.

You may not even need to buy retail kit. Every major UK provider now offers its own mesh, usually as an opt-in add-on or bundled with higher-tier packages:

  • BT Complete Wi-Fi: Smart Hub 2 plus Wi-Fi Discs, around £8 a month, with a guaranteed signal in every room.
  • Sky Wi-Fi Max: Sky Hub plus Wi-Fi Max boosters, around £6 a month, included with Full Fibre Max.
  • Virgin Media Intelligent Wi-Fi Plus: Hub 4 or 5 plus Wi-Fi pods, around £8 a month, free on Volt and gig packages.
  • EE Smart Wi-Fi Plus: Smart Hub Pro plus Smart Wi-Fi discs, around £7 a month, with a signal guarantee on Full Fibre.
  • Plusnet: Hub Two plus a Wi-Fi extender, around £5 a month as an add-on.
  • Vodafone Super Wi-Fi Pro II: hub plus Super Wi-Fi pods, included on Pro II tiers.

These are usually a step behind the best retail kits on raw performance, but they integrate cleanly with the provider hub and are covered by the same support line. Before buying anything, open your provider's companion app, most now show signal strength room by room, and ask them to run a survey. BT, Sky and EE will send extra kit if their gear cannot cover every room under their signal guarantee. Five minutes with the app can save you buying hardware you did not need.

Which should you choose?

  • One dead room, tight budget, light use: a single extender at £15 to £40 will usually do the job.
  • Patchy Wi-Fi across several rooms, a three-bedroom-plus or multi-storey home, or full fibre at 500 Mbps or more: a mesh is the right answer.
  • You can run Ethernet to the problem area, and you game or work from home: a wired access point, or a mesh with wired backhaul, gives the most stable result.
  • No cable possible but you want better than a repeater: try powerline adapters, accepting that your wiring dictates the outcome.
  • Already paying an ISP for mesh and still have dead spots: ask them to survey your home before spending more.
