UK On Track to Achieve 85% Gigabit Broadband Coverage by 2025, Ofcom Reports
The UK is making significant strides towards its goal of providing gigabit-capable broadband to 85% of homes and businesses by 2025, according to a new report from Ofcom. The communications regulator revealed that nearly 70% of premises now have access to these ultra-fast connections, up from just 47% a year ago.
Rapid Expansion of Gigabit Networks
Ofcom’s data shows that gigabit broadband coverage has expanded rapidly over the past year, with an additional 9 million premises gaining access. This brings the total number of homes and businesses with gigabit availability to around 20.8 million.
“We’ve seen a massive surge in gigabit broadband rollout over the last 12 months,” said Ofcom’s Director of Network Infrastructure, James Barford. “Providers are racing to connect as many properties as possible, and it’s great news for consumers.”
BT Openreach Leads the Charge
Much of this growth can be attributed to BT Openreach, which has significantly expanded its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. The company now covers 8.2 million premises with its full-fiber service, up from just 4.6 million a year ago.
“Our engineers have been working tirelessly to bring gigabit speeds to more homes and businesses,” said Katie Milligan, MD for Customer, Commercial & Propositions at Openreach. “We’re on track to reach 25 million premises by the end of 2026.”
Virgin Media O2 Contributes to Growth
Virgin Media O2 has also played a key role in expanding gigabit coverage. The company’s cable network, which uses DOCSIS 3.1 technology, can now deliver gigabit speeds to 15.6 million premises, representing 52% of the UK.
“We’re proud to be connecting more people than ever to our lightning-fast network,” said Lutz Schüler, CEO of Virgin Media O2. “With our ongoing investments, we’ll continue to bring the benefits of gigabit broadband to even more communities.”
Consumers Reap the Benefits
For homeowners like Sarah Thompson, a 35-year-old graphic designer from Manchester, the availability of gigabit broadband has been a game-changer. “I used to struggle with slow speeds and constant buffering,” she said. “But since upgrading to a gigabit connection, I can work from home seamlessly and stream 4K content without any issues.”
Similarly, small business owner Mark Davis, who runs an e-commerce store from his home in Bristol, has seen significant improvements. “Gigabit broadband has allowed me to process orders faster and provide better customer service,” he noted. “It’s been a real boost for my business.”
Closing the Digital Divide
Despite these advancements, Ofcom acknowledges that there is still work to be done to ensure that everyone in the UK has access to high-speed broadband. The regulator estimates that around 1.5 million premises, primarily in rural areas, still lack access to speeds of at least 30 Mbps.
To address this issue, the UK government has pledged £5 billion to support the rollout of gigabit networks in hard-to-reach areas. This funding, combined with ongoing investments from providers, is expected to help close the digital divide and ensure that no community is left behind.
Looking to the Future
As the UK continues its push towards nationwide gigabit coverage, experts predict that demand for these ultra-fast connections will only continue to grow. With more people working from home, streaming content, and relying on digital services, having access to reliable, high-speed broadband will become increasingly essential.
“We’re on the cusp of a digital revolution,” said Barford. “Gigabit broadband will unlock new opportunities for innovation, productivity, and economic growth. It’s an exciting time for the UK’s digital infrastructure.”
